A Broken Past
Trunks is the child of Vegeta, prince of the last remnants of the Saiyan race, and Bulma Briefs, genius inventor and heiress of Capsule Corp, one of the largest corporations on the planet. His normal childhood was cut short with the arrival of two androids, who killed most of humanity along with his father, sending he and his mother into hiding for fear of their lives.
He spent the rest of his youth hiding with his mother as she tried to find a way to save their world. During which he trained to protect the few people left in his life under the tutelage of Gohan, son of Goku, an old friend of his mother and considered the most powerful warrior to ever live. Under his guidance, Trunks grew stronger and learned how to fight.
Tragedy would strike the half Saiyan again when Gohan faced the androids alone and died, sending Trunks into a grief so intense it unlocked his ability to make the transformation into a super saiyan. Years later, his mother would finish her project, a time machine that would allow them to save Earth, even if it was only in another timeline.
Trunks underwent his mission and helped the people he never had the chance to meet overcome the androids as well as another threat called Cell. He returned to his timeline triumphant and intended to live in peace after dealing with the androids and cell in his own timeline.
He was able to live peacefully for only a moment before the lord of time, Chronoa, confronted him for altering time, which is against the laws of reality as it can cause the universe to become unstable. As penance, Trunks offered to assist with protecting the flow of time by joining the Time Patrol.

Studied under his mother throughout his life, essentially apprenticing under her during projects to hone his skills in a real work environment. Although nowhere near her level in terms of genius, he has an understanding of complex machinery including capsules, vehicles, and materials, although his time machine can be an anomaly to his understanding, only knowing how to perform emergency repairs and some of its components.
Also studied martial arts under the Gohan from his timeline, making his fighting style is much more reminiscent of Goku and Piccolo than his father's. Has done independent training as well after his former master died, developing a few techniques entirely his own, most notably of this is his ability with swords.

Scenario 1: There was a miscalculation. A damaged component somewhere within the hull of the time capsule. Trunks could tell the moment the ignition was primed. Was it sabotage? Was it simply an error in the math somewhere? He did not know. All he knew was that he and his mother's plan had hit a roadblock.
As the world around him shifted, it was too late to reverse the operation. Colors and shapes shifted, warped beyond recognition. When new ones took their place in the haze, they were unrecognizable. Buildings of alien architecture surrounded him, and the people spoke different. Wore fashion he was unfamiliar with. Once he acended and looked down at the surrounding terrain, a realization struck him, one that sent a pang of cold into his core.
He was not in the past. He was in another world.
Scenario 2:Despite the efforts of the Time Patrol, rampant alterations of time has weakened the firmament between realities. Tears to other dimensions have opened, leading to worlds unlike anything the Time Patrol has encountered before. These tears have allowed people and artifacts to exchange between the two realities, threatening the safety and balance between both. An emergency task force was created to help seal and defend these worlds while a permanent solution can be achieved, and Trunks was among the first to be selected.
Now Trunks travels between the rifts, protecting the worlds he finds himself on.
"These rifts exist because of my failure to protect the timeline. It's only right that I try to fix them."
Fun vs Power
Dragon Ball Z has a reputation for being extremely over-the-top and overpowered. While it's fun in the context of the show, I can understand why some people would find roleplaying with characters from the verse to be intimidating. I just want to put a note here to let people know that I'm completely for scaling down Trunks's power for the sake of everyone's fun. I find the character and the stories we make to be more fun than being a powerhouse that can level anything he comes across.

Hilariously Some fellas just crawled out the woodwork and they're like 'Aw your Rei is crushing on Trunks.' And one is an OC one is a Josuke. 'I was like y'all. Anyone would trade up. Please. It's TRUNKS.' It was all in good humor.
But I do know that yucky drama side of stuff. I dealt with a boat load of it near the end of last year. :Almost deleted this whole account. And I am so glad I didn't! Really?
