Chapter Seven: Ancient Shadows
Category: Stories

"O Lord, we call upon You in our time of sorrow, That You give us the strength and will to bear our heavy burdens, until we can again feel the warmth and love of Your divine compassion. Be mindful of us and have mercy on us while we struggle to comprehend life's hardships. Keep us ever in Your watch, til we can walk again with light hearts and renewed spirits."

He didn't honestly know how it happened, or even why. All he knew was that it were either by some chance of fate, or predestined equation, that they would meet and become friends. However, on the day that they first met, he were thinking of anything but that.

They had encountered one another at school, her last name were towards the end of the alphabet, and his were at the beginning. The teacher had made plans that day for everyone to go around, and introduce themselves, and say at least one thing that they enjoyed doing. Remiel's had been to attend church, and help out the less fortunate; two reasons, but the teacher let it slide, and her's had been nature. He learned her name that day too, a name he'd never soon forget. Aiko. Aiko Megurine.

After their little introductory seminar, the children were to return to their seats, and the real lessons began. Though, it were after such lessons, at the end of the day when Aiko approached him again, a mysterious twinkle in those clear, albeit dark blue eyes of her's. Her hair was pink. How on earth was that even possible? He wanted to ask her, but thought it rude, since his logical mind were saying how it had probably been an accident, or else she had begged her parents to dye her hair that color. However, his creative mind were saying it were natural, and that there were something strangely abnormal about this girl, which caused a small blush to bloom across his lips. How dare he think such things about someone he barely even knew!

She had been looking at him intently until she succeeded in drawing the youth from his thoughts, and to focus his attention back on her. Their gazes met and locked, as once more Remiel felt the awkward pull right in the center of his body, as if some spark had just been ignited, and his very soul reached out to this girl. However, it did not appear as if the feeling had been mutual, for her expression never faultered, and he suddenly began to grow a bit uncomfortable. A tinge of redness coming to himself, as a small temper flared up, and he scowled at the girl.

"You know, it's not very nice to stare," said the six year-old, and the little girl looked back at him. Before bursting out laughing. "What's so funny?" demanded a disgruntled Remiel.

Her eyes twinkled in the light of the classroom as she finally turned away from him to grab her coat, and lunch pack. "You are, silly," said the girl, which only irriated Remiel all the more, but he refrained from saying anything in response; having been brought up and taught to never argue with a woman, especially one so young.

"Why's that?"

"Because," said Aiko pulling on her pink puffy jacket, "I can see that you are destined for greatness, but even you yourself don't know it yet, and you put yourself out in the open like this. Are you trying to bring about a revelation before you even reach your prime?"

"What?!" said Remiel thoroughly confused now.

Aiko giggled some more, finishing putting on her coat. She walked back over to Remiel, and lightly poked him in the nose. "You have an Old Soul, Jonas, and if I were you, I'd make it habit to learn how to protect yourself, or else to never leave the safety of that church of your's."

"What's that suppose to mean? Am I being hunted or something?"

Aiko's eyes twinkled again, and she shrugged lightly, glancing behind the youth, as if there were someone standing behind him.

"Something like that," said the pink-haired girl as she ran to meet up with her mother and father. She waved after Remiel. "See you tomorrow in school, Jonas!" As without another word, she turned on her heel, and took her leave of the building.

Remiel was left dumbfounded, and when his own mother and father came to pick him up, he fell into a slight depression. As he pondered over what Aiko had said; did she somehow know of his run-in with Azrael? And just what exactly did she mean by him possessing an 'Old Soul'? Just what exactly was that?

Whatever it had meant, or did mean, he hoped that his little library of books would provide him with some answers once he arrived home.
