The moment Kaede had confirmed what Kagome suspected, Inuyasha’s stomach had dropped. His eyes widened and all he wanted to do was run. His heart thundered in his ears, beating a rapid rhythm that should be reserved for fighting alone! He couldn’t get away though. That would have broken Kagome’s heart and the last thing he wanted was to see tears in her eyes at what should be a joyful time. She stood opposite him, waiting for his reaction. A light breeze tugged her black hair away from her face, her large brown eyes boring into him. He sucked in a breath and nodded. “That’s great,” he said. He knew it sounded hollow, but what more could he do?
He was going to be a father! How did that happen? Well, he knew how it happened but that didn’t matter right now. They had been careful! Had they not spoken about this and decided to wait a while? They’d been married three months now, which was no time at all. There was so much to do! So many things to sort out before they even considered children, and now this?
Running a hand over the back of his neck, he pressed his lips together and shuffled a bit. On top of all that, he had no idea how to be a father! He’d never had one of his own to look up to while growing up, and now that he was an adult, it didn’t seem to matter all that much. A single brief meeting was all he’d had, and that had been over in less than a heartbeat. How was he going to learn to do it? And do it well for that matter! There were no books on it!
“Are you alright?” Kaede asked, “You’ve gone very pale all of a sudden, Inuyasha”
“I’m fine, quit asking,” he barked without thinking.
“Can you give us a minute?” Kagome asked. The elder woman inclined her head, smiled and then stepped away. Kagome approached and took his hands in hers. “You’re freaking out aren’t you?” she whispered.
“No,” Inuyasha lied. She let go of one hand and gently led him away from the village. Without people watching, it might be easier for him to come to terms with what had happened. Or at least freak out a little easier.
He let her take him away from people, where he could process this news a little easier. The hill behind their house was the perfect spot. When they had both settled on the soft grass, Kagome smiled. For a while, they didn’t speak. Inuyasha let his thoughts run riot in his head. Several times, he opened his mouth to ask something before closing it again. Where did you even begin with something as large as this. It was almost like the first time he had told her he loved her; it felt as big!
“It’s alright if you are unsure,” she said. He was glad she was the one to break the silence. “I’m a little freaked out by it too. I hadn’t expected that to happen quite so quickly.”
“Yeah,” he replied softly. He tore his eyes away from her and looked out over the landscape. The sun was out, some of the villagers were working in the paddy fields, the conical hats keeping their eyes shielded from the bright light. It was a peaceful place now, that made it safe. No other demons had come to harass anyone since Kagome’s return, and life was easy. It was the perfect place to raise a family and yet… “Were you not taking that medicine to prevent this from happening?” he asked.
He thought he saw a flash of irritation on Kagome’s face, but couldn’t be sure if it was there, it was gone so fast, “I can’t get more, and they ran out!” she said. Yes, definite irritation.
“I’m not angry,” he said. “I just… I have no idea how to be a father! I can’t fight a child and that’s all I know how to do!” He pictured trying to fight his way out of dirty nappies and shuddered.
“I’ve never been a mother before either,” Kagome said.
“But you’re a woman, all women know how to look after babies,” Inuyasha said. How hard could it be? Sango seemed to be managing just fine with it. Kagome looked even more irritated now. “What?” he asked.
“Why don’t we just try and work it out together? I’ve never had a baby of my own before you know.” The irritation died when he smiled, and she snuggled into his shoulder. Shifting, he let her into his warmth. He tucked her head under his chin, his heart calmed and he drew in a breath.
“That should work,” he said. “I’m sure there is going to be more panic before he gets here…”
“He?” Kagome asked.
“Yeah, just a feeling I have,” he whispered.
“It might be a girl you know,” Kagome said. Inuyasha finally smiled. Maybe it would be alright after all. If she was there beside him, then he was sure this would work out for the best. They were a great team, why shouldn’t they be great parents?
