Born into a family of criminals, all Arthur had ever known was how to lie and keep secrets. As a kid, he was bullied in school. He was fat, awkward and quiet, a triple threat that meant getting by peacefully wasn’t an option. He was belittled and bullied endlessly, then came home to doting parents who spoiled him while convincing him to take part in their crimes. Their love was real, but misguided. They weren’t real parents. They were ignorant to their son’s struggles, and though they would quickly kill any person who inconvenienced him in the slightest without a second thought, they failed to realize the real problems he was facing.
One year in middle school, it became too much to bear. A new kid came in and made his life even worse, turning what little decent relationships he had against him and destroying everything he had.
After turning fifteen, Arthur knew it was time to change. He hated everything about himself, his family, and his situation. So the following summer he spent every moment trying to better his life. He convinced his parents to change schools, began to ignore them and their insistence of his involvement in the crime world, and lost all the weight until there was nothing left but the scars.
However, after losing the weight and starting at a new school, something happened that he could not have ever predicted. He had just wanted to be left alone, to mind his business and disappear into the background. But then, he became popular. For what reason he couldn’t imagine. But people spoke to him unprompted, invited him out, genuinely listened to what he had to say. It wasn’t until one night that he realized why — when one of his classmates admitted their motivation was purely sexual. Their interest in him was mostly just for the outward packaging in hopes they would spend the night together.
Unsure how to handle the attention, he caved into their affections. Though quiet and passive, he began to sleep with anyone who showed even the slightest bit of interest, gaining a reputation that was entirely opposite of what he had once had. But he didn’t care. The feeling of not being alone outweighed everything else and he spiraled into it, not caring for a moment if there were feelings involved or not.
And it didn’t take long for him to notice that people at school weren’t the only ones taking interest.
His parents had always had creepy friends, but they’d never taken an interest in him before. Angry and confused, hating and loving his parents at the same time for their obliviousness to everything around them, he decided to get back at them subtly. Secretly. Creating discourse in their crime network by pitting their employees against each other with a dark secret they could never share — or surely face a cruel death.
Empty and hollow, he just exists now. Everyday the same. His parents oblivious to everything, still trying to hook him back into the crime world. And, finally, he caves into it, hating them every moment for dragging him in, and wishing he could, for once, just know what it was like to have someone genuinely care him.
