Hiei is a dark minded individual who has had dark things happen in his past. This has caused a Chemical Imbalance in his brain to cause him to not function like everyone else. He does not sink in information like everyone else. He is determined to change this about himself so others will not look down on him. He is charming, honest, loyal, and prideful, as he is a prince of the neko community in his high school. His mother is abusive, and his father left him when he was about 8 years old. He didn't remember a lot of the arguments that went on between them because his mother kept them from him because she did not want her children involved in the divorice and did not want to traumatize them anymore than she had by splitting up the family in the first place. Hiei and Hana were two of the children that were affected the most by this split up. Hiei was somewhat depressed for a long, long time aftereward. He lost his best friend, his friend, and his teacher. His father that he looked up to for so many things, and put on the throne to take care of his sisters. He was meant to be strong-willed, selfish, and self-centered, but he put those emotions aside for taking care of his family when they needed it and did not have a childhood of his own to really look back on other than with the late night tv that he watched and playing video games that he took his anger and frustrations out on, and other coping mechanisms that he used such as alcohol and smoking he picked up when he went to high school and met Junko Yamako. Jun was to become Hiei's best friend and "partner in crime" in pulling pranks on teachers, and would eventually get them both sent to detention alot where Hiei would meet his first boyfriend Kyle.

Hiei is the sort of person who gets what he wants, when he wants. It doesn't matter who he has to step on to get what he wants. He hurts a lot of people without worrying about the consequences, and he makes sure that happens because of a long line of rules that were happening in high school. He is the main person people go to for advice, for sexual needs, and for company. Hiei is someone Hanako adores more than anything and wants to be his princess one day, so she follows him around like a lost puppy or kitten in this case. He is the prince of the Neko tribe in the school of Nakamura High School. The modern era of Nakamura High School, many things have happened in the last four years, and he could not be anxious enough for these four years to be over and he can rule the tribe out in the fields.
The high school was built by his father and was working in the medical pharmacy within the town of Okinawa where he was hoping Hiei would follow in his footsteps when he was just a boy. He was looking forward to seeing what kind of man Hiei would become when he grew up. Sometimes he wondered what was going on inside the mind of his twenty-three-year-old. He had just graduated and was living in an apartment on his own for a while. He had several friends living with him like it was some kind of half-way house or something. He wanted better for his son, but Hiei wouldn't hear a word of it and no longer wanted to become a part of the royal family and resigned his role much to Hana's regret. She felt sorry that she looked up to him all those years and now it was all for nothing and she got very angry at him.
Hiei was Hanako's precious jewel and protector of her well-being, and she looked up to him like he was such a "God-like" presence. Hiei wanted nothing to do with the royal family and this decision would soon become a regret since everyone wanted to be friends with the neko on the off chance he would be generous enough to hand them some money or some cash. However, the money went to Hiei's head and did not know what to do with the amount he got and became arrogant, self-centered, and selfish; even with Hanako, especially now that she was getting older. She was starting to get on his nerves the most as he was her older brother and she was his younger sister. She was the baby of the family and nearly got everything she wanted no matter what it was.
Even though he was the same, he only got what he wanted because he worked for what he had. His parents did NOT give him money, and told him that if he wanted to go anywhere in life that he would have to learn to work on the field and this slightly made him angry that he was told that he was having to work while his sister was able to sit on her butt and do nothing until she was at least 28 when she had a child of her own and had to find someway to support it. Hiei was not going to give her any money and not going to support her growing family. Maybe that's when the rift began to tear them apart. Someone else would step in and help, but that wasn't going to be him.

iei and Hanako Katsumoto were born under Sayumi and Hibiki Katsumoto, with an older brother named Natsumi Katsumoto. The two parents, Sayumi and Hibiki had a falling out and split the family up into two pairs; Hiei and Hanako would go with Sayumi and Natsumi would go with Hibiki Katsumoto. They would keep the Katsumoto last name as a tribute to their original family structure. Their religious beliefs landed in the Catholic and Baptist Christian areas. One on either side and neither of Sayumi nor Hibiki's parents liked the idea of them getting married and starting a family.
Of course, no one did at this period of time because the survival rate of children over the age of two or three would not live past that age. That's why having families during this time were discouraged. The neko clan's of the northern mountains, Hibiki reigned over all the neko clan's there and reigned supreme conquest and the power that came with it. Hiei did not like this kind of power-trip that his father held over him and his sister. He would have to train and read/study all the time and never had anything to do with what he wanted to do.
He did not have much of a childhood other than raising Hanako when their mother was out working and staying at home to watch his sister and not getting to hang out with his friends put a strain on their relationship with his mother being over-protective of Hana and be-rating Hiei for not watching her on a daily basis and making sure she had the same care and attention she would get if Sayumi would have if she were to be home if she could be while she was working at her weapon's shop job in the city.
She demonstrated weapons and set a price on them for the highest bidder and made money on the bidding price. There were auctions nearly every day and sometimes she did not come home until extremely late and Hiei had to put Hana to bed. He would watch her while she slept promising he would always protect her, even if he wasn't there. Months later, their mother passed away of breast cancer and were forced to move to Hibiki and Natsumi's home. The lot of them were under one roof again and there was some tension and Hiei did not like how much pressure was being put on both himself, and Hana.
After staying with his father for such a short time he was able to get a working job at a local farm. He worked over the farm and raced the horses there. He was somewhat awestruck by the creatures and knew they had a soul. He did not know if he believed in "God" or a "Higher Power" but he definitely felt there was something "Mythical" that made the wonderful things in the world that made Hiei happy inside. It made living with Hibiki barable and he would only say he thought there was a "Higher Power." Because he knew there would be no benevolent yet vengeful God at the same time that would take his beautiful mother away, and split a perfectly good family away.
As he walked home from school from the gym one day he noticed his sister in the spot where the bus would come to pick up the children. She was getting beat up by some grade schoolers. Some of them over 14 and 15. So, Hiei got angry, walked over to them and beat them up the way they beat his sister up and after that she never had to deal with them again. In fact, the very next day they begged for forgiveness and even offered to be her friend if she wanted. She stuck up her nose and denied the offer and walked home with her brother in tow, to make sure they did not have any more plans of attack on his sister.
Life was hard for Hiei and Hanako. Hiei was a Neko prince from another country so naturally he got a lot of attention, but he had to cope somehow, and he did so by hiding in the bathrooms and making love to multiple male Neko's (and some female; he wasn't picky), but he would not openly admit that he was gay. He was discussing this with his therapist, but this is something he only had the guts to open up to someone in private and behind closed doors. He did not feel ashamed, but he wasn't ready to "come out of the closet" yet either. He already had the pressure of being a prince of the Neko kingdom, but the fact remained that he was uncomfortable with these feelings, and they needed to be addressed.
season two
A fter living in Hibiki's abusive care and an alcoholic father, he would come to school with bruises and cuts on his face with bandages on his cuts. He would not be the stronger person in the household anymore, but a punching bag for his father when he got home from the bar from drinking a few drinks and coming back home to beat his children. He would never lay a hand on Hana though. He would leave something more disgusting for her later. She would never say anything about it to Hiei, but he knew what was happening. His grades were slipping, and he stopped caring about going to medical school when he wanted to help families with their drug and alcohol problems and help others understand that alcohol and drugs were a disease not a habit.
He wanted to be someone for someone else like himself that were in these situations be a bright light for someone in the dark. A light at the end of the tunnel. He was studying in the library when he heard the news that his father's collapse was due to a mild heart attack and Hiei couldn't have cared less and told them to take him to the hospital and leave him there to die because he wanted nothing more to do with him. He now had Hanako and Natsumi to take care of. He would become a provider and a student once more he would be a proud prince and take his rightful place in this clan of Neko children. They were small and broken, but they were still a good family, just very rough around the edges.
Sometimes Hiei wondered what it would be like to have a cookie-cutter lifestyle. Sometimes he wondered what it would be like to have a "semi-normal" life when you didn't have to fight inner-demons all the time, and not have any help. He felt alone in the world because his mother was more concerned about appearances and money than her own family and his father was a vegetable. It was up to him to take care of his family and get them what they needed. At some point he would have to ask them to get jobs to help support the family, their home, bills, and extra things such as food and other appliances. He would have to be the adult and not a seventeen year old boy anymore. He would have to be the muscles of the family once again like when they were children. He did not mind, though; he wanted a job like this when he was older. This would give him practice. He wanted to be a case worker ; helping families with their personal issues.
However, after taking the role of the father-figure of both of his siblings and several other teenagers in his area, he forgot his role of a student, a teacher, and a nurse practitioner. He took the role of a father-figure; he took a new light in helping others in keeping away from broken homes and offering a safer haven in his own home where he would allow several others coming into his home and allowing Hanako and Natsumi help him with the bills so they could live there as well. They would have regular meals, keep bills paid, and the other people who would live with them would contribute by doing household chores and would keep schedules to keep things in a routine manner so things could run smoothly in the home. They would live peacefully as they continued to live together.
Nothing prepared him for the shooting in his home. Suddenly several bullets hammered the home in which he build through blood, sweat, and tears with both compassion and responsibility; he felt the shots being fired at the home like a rapid pop, pop, pop! Hiei ordered everyone out of the house and to get into lower ground, and somewhat out of the way of the fire. They kept lowered, kept themselves covered, and kept themselves protected with Hiei's warm embrace. He did not know who would shoot at them. They were doing nothing wrong as far as he knew he was allowed to do what he wanted at the age of 18. He would have run away sooner, but he would not leave Hanako with his abusive father and absent mother.
It was not until after the fact that Hiei got his own gun out and continued the fight between the gunman and himself. He successfully killed the other one in his own defense, and he told the others to run and get away. He would catch up with them later after everything was done. Everyone would be taken care of, and he wouldn't let anything happen to them. He would not let his new family down the way his old one did. His "new" family, did not abandon him for weeks on end with a two year old to take care of, he did not expect him to pay house and electric bills.
He has experienced some rough things in his young life and he would not wish it on his worst enemy to deal with emotional, verbal, and sometimes physical abuse. The physical abuse was always saved for later in the night when Hiei was awake and the rest of the house was asleep. His father would take a whip and lash his back, taking it and strike his back with the lashes causing many scars to form and he was ashamed when he revealed the scars when he removed his shirt if he had to such as being in the boys locker-room or during sexual intercourse.
season three
Hiei grew up and became a medical nurse at the local Katsumoto Company. The Nakamura organization was working on family dysfunction, therapy, group therapy, and other methods of helping people out in the field. It was a hard job, but it was completely worth it and continuing to work its way to the top of the medical field. The CEO of the Katsumoto Medical Company, Hiei Katsumoto, would be working with young teens and adults with many different problems at home.
He would be a counsoler for many of them going through some of the same things he went through as a teenager and as a young adult himself. He knew in this field you could not relate to anyone if you had not gone through it yourself. He knew he would feel that way if he was still in his teens and some doctor came and told me how to feel and how he could help him with medication and therapy methods.
He did not mean to change people's lives for the better, but he hoped he could help them understand their position in life wasn't by accident and that they all had a purpose and they wanted them to stay here so they could find what that purpose was. Hiei was not a religious kind of guy so he did not use religion in his practice. He knew most of the kids that he worked with would feel the same way. He knew how they felt because he had been there. Dr. Katsumoto's room was silent with quiet music playing in the background.
Hiei's room was neutral to say the least. There was little to nothing in the room save for a desk and a "Dell" computer to write up prescriptions and taking notes from his patients, and writing down important things to remember for his next time visits when they were scheduled to come back again. Leaving his life of being an arrogant prince to someone who would like to help people, he thought that was the better way to go. Aside from his funny cat ears and tail no one seemed to mind his weirdness.
Children were curious creatures and would often ask if they could play with his ears. Hiei thought they were comforted by the fact that they were "cute" and "Fuzzy," and he thought it was just adorable. but in honesty it was best to keep professional and 'cute' separate. So he had his job to work with the patients by day, and while he was at night he was still taking care of his brother and sister. The people who were living with him in his apartment as a safe haven all scattered to the winds, and he continued to be a "father-figure" to Natsumi and Hanako. Hanako had a boyfriend and was working at the local gas station and was starting to get her life together. Natsumi was still a little young and continued to make mistakes with girls that were not right for him.
He had several "heart-to-heart" talks with Natsumi since he always seemed to need more help than Hanako. Hanako only came around if she was tired from work. She seemed to be adjusting to their life as a three - man team and taking care of one another since their parents were no where to be seen. Hiei was head of the family and no one did anything without his permission. He did not want to know about what they did the other night and with who, as long as they were in the house by 11 had their food, showers, and teeth brushed they were free to do whatever they wanted. He did not care if they had sex and got pregnant ; he just wanted them safe and taken care of.
As for his job, he would continue to take care of the other patients in his workload, hoping he could care for as many people as possible. The kind of people who would not be able to help themselves if they were not helped by someone who was more capable with more resources and more. Either way, Hiei slept better at night knowing his father and mother were out of their lives for good when they were locked up for beating Natsumi up and having the police called on them for the complaints of noises around the apartment they lived in. Hanako, Natsumi , and Hiei were only allowed to stay together because they were not minors, and were given a chance to live in their own home for as long as they needed.
Natsumi protected Hanako from getting beaten on that night. He wasn't just taking it for himself; he was protecting someone else. Hiei thought that was admirable, and he gave his brother an huge embrace that night and did not waver with his eyes. "You did good." and Natsumi, his baby brother, sobbed.
