Oblivionis velamento

Hello! This is a starter I wrote for an upcoming discord group roleplay heavily inspired by the horror video game series called 'Fatal Frame'. I quite liked how it turned out so I thought i'd share it as another sample. Enjoy!

"Come on dad, Are you almost done? At this rate we won't get there until night fall.."

It had never ceased to amaze her just how easily her old man could rope her back into the hunting life. Ever since their unexpected reunion he'd somewhat evaded the reasoning for her departure in the first place. Even after she had practically blew up in his face about it that fateful day. Still... he was making an effort to keep her out of it unless he absolutely needed her. Which was more sincerity than he had ever shown to her wishes back then. Guilt inevitably prompting her to acquiesced to his request if only to ensure he didn't get himself killed.

"Hold your horses, I just gotta find one more thing. I swear ya sound more like your mother everyday..." a rugged tone bellowed in front of an informative plaque. With a sigh the albino stood before a glass case that housed a peculiar object, An old Model 45 Polaroid Land Camera. Unable to help but admire a piece of history about her hobby fondly before turning towards him. "I think we have enough to go forward, I mean we had more info than this museum did. It's the same old shtick: Big spooky house, unsettling family, missing people. We've seen it dozens of times before.." A stern set of deep brown optics found her with a heavy sigh before walking past her with a pat to her shoulder.

"That doesn't mean it isn't worth investigating, Ly. Here take these and go get the old girl started while I stop into the gift shop to grab us some stuff for the road." Tossing her the keys she simply shrugged before making her exit to get the car warmed up. Boot pounded against the marble flooring as the man made his way to the gift shop with a defeated sigh. Elias had been trying so hard to reconnect with Lyla but it nearly seemed impossible. She had become so stubborn and independent that he hardly recognized his little girl. Not to say he wasn't proud beyond words but he wished she would rely on him like she use to.

Spotting a standing cooler the hunter made heavy strides towards it before something upon a shelf caught his eye. On the shelf seemed to be the very same camera that Lyla had been checking out a moment ago. Checking the label it seemed it was an impressive replica of the antique despite the overpricing. Seeing an opportunity he scooped up the single remaining item before setting back to the task at hand. Collecting a few choice bottles from the refrigerator before making his way to the register with a prideful grin. Perhaps this trip wasn't going to be so tense after all!

Awaiting in 'Betty', her father's treasured 1968 dodge challenger, Lyla couldn't help but be browsing her phone. With her background being a rather obnoxiously fitting snapshot of the gang she couldn't help but wonder what they were up to. Hopefully Bruno wasn't being driven to the brink by the inevitable nonsense his crew always subjected him to. A sigh sounding as she couldn't help but remember how adamantly he had disliked her decision to go. 'I'll only be gone a week tops, I promise.' her words rang through her head almost painfully. Hopefully this job would be quick and clean so she wasn't made to be a liar and cause them worry. They were already going on day four just from doing the in-depth research for the case alone.

Suddenly she was torn from her thoughts by the swinging of the car door as it opened. Tucking the phone quickly into her pocket as the male plopped down into his seat with a satisfied smile. "Here, I got ya something." he said before handing her the bag which only coaxed a raised brow from the albino. Opening it up her eyes admittedly widened as she plucked the replica from the plastic. "Dad..." she huffed bashfully as she examined the device with a curious wonderment. "...Thanks." she chimed quietly with a sincere smile, Elias chuckling in unspoken victory before pulling from the lot with swelling pride.

**----------2 hours later----------**

After a modestly uneventful car ride, aside from some overly enthusiastic karaoke on Elias' part, they arrived at the chained off gate. A metal sign tucked to the side issuing a warning to keep out because it was private property in italian. Some quick handiwork with a pair of bolt cutters ensuring their passage inside. Driving up the gravel path it wasn't long until they sat in front of their destination. The roar of the engine was quickly cut short as the duo finally reached their destination. The weather taking a grim turn as the light that once shimmered off the black coat of the vehicle was now shrouded by foreboding storm clouds. "Typical.." huffed from Lyla's lips as she stepped out to examine the property alongside her father.

Maniero di Vecellio, A crumbling venetian villa built in the 18th century for Stefano Vecellio thanks to his growing wealth. It was said that Stefano was manically obsessed with all things beautiful. His addiction to vanity being so severe that even when he wed his bride was forced to adhere to his demands on her looks. Even the staff and caretakers of the grounds were set to nearly impossible standards under threat of punishment if they faltered. Not even the test of time, natural aging, spared people from his inexplicable wrath. Countless people, including his own wife and their fraternal twins, going missing before the man himself seemed to vanish.

"Alright, Grab the bag from the trunk and lets get started." he commanded in a habitual professionalism. Lyla moving to pop the trunk before plucking a black heavyweight canvas duffle bag from it. Packed to the brim with their essentials and a few spare toys just in case things went belly up. "You remember our rules?" his question was stern but not the least bit lacking in genuine concern. Undoing the bag just to pull out a crowbar as they approached the boarded front entrance. "Please Dad, It may have been awhile but it isn't like I could ever forget. Stay in view, keep your weapon in reach, and always have an exit in mind."

A content nod was expressed between the two before he set to work towards getting them into the estate. Board after board being torn off with brute strength before the door was finally exposed. Plucking the Swiss army knife from her pocket she made quick work of the lock before they stepped inside. A thick scent of  dust and mildew rushed them, Lyla reaching into their bag for the pair of tactical flashlights they'd packed before clicking them to life. Immediately being followed by their weapons of choice, A pair of M1911 pistols. Loading their clips they exchanged a knowing glance before venturing to explore the home.

Carefully Lyla and Elias seemed to wander through the entryway and past a large staircase until they seemed to locate the kitchen. Cobwebs enlaced around cabinet handles as there was no signs of movement to be had. Nothing had set foot in this place for years as evident by the lacking disturbance of settled dust. Though upon further exploring the albino managed to locate the power box for the villa. "Lets see if this works..." she mumbled before popping open the compartment and flipping the switches. Surprisingly enough bringing the entire house to life with a gentle electrical hum.

"Well seems we got ourselves some luck kiddo!" the older male chuckled before handing her his flashlight to stow away with her own in the bag once more. "Lets set up shop in the living room and go from there." plan in mind she followed him back out to the main hall. Faint light exposing the unusually well kept interior, The decor that wasn't covered befitting a clear renaissance revival. A round table resting near a boarded window became their central base of operations. Cautious hues of ice peering around even as her father unloaded their haul of goodies for the evening. "Relax Ly, We're safe for now. Go ahead and start scoping the top floor. I'll be right behind you."

With a quick nod the albino set herself to work, Keeping her pistol close as she headed up the stairs. Her sights on a doorway located at the very top of the staircase before she cracked it open to head inside. Keeping track of the sounds around him Elias set to preparing their equipment. Thermometers, audio recorders, motion sensors, there were a great many things in the Bardot toolkit. Plucking an EMF device from the table he flicked it to life only for it to begin screeching almost immediately. Sending the seasoned hunter on high alert as he kept the device in hand and raised his weapon before turning around.

What he came to find admittedly set him off guard.

Perched upon the back of a sheet covered sofa was none other than the gift that Elias had given to Lyla. "What the f***? She didn't bring that in with her did she?..." he questioned hesitantly. The closed camera suddenly moving on its own to pop open with absurd speed, Forcing the male to jump and pull the trigger. Yet it was already too late. A blinding flash was all it took as the male's eyes suddenly became inhumanly hollow. Any movement entirely ceasing even as the shot rang out to alert the woman upstairs. "DAD?!" Feet couldn't carry her fast enough as she nearly tripped down the stairs before aiming sharply.

Tension swarmed her delicate features as she noticed him simply standing there despite her shout. "...Dad?..." she called out with skepticism as she approached with extreme caution and reached out to touch him. "What's the matter? Why'd you fire like that?" yet when she leaned to find his face terror filled her eyes. "Dad! Say something! Come on!" panic threw her off her game as he seemed almost statuesque. Those lifeless eyes sending hauntingly familiar tremors down her spine as she began to look around the room defensively. Eyes settling on a familiar camera now resting among their things that she KNEW she didn't bring in from the car.

Her keen eye was quick enough to prompt her to start running before the pop sounded, Saving her from the first flash. A hand darted into her pocket as she pulled her cell phone out and clutched it tightly. She needed to get help, Needed to tell somebody what was happening before it was too late. Rushing into what appeared to be the dining room she spotted what seemed to be a patio door. If she could get out she could call the gang and have more backup for whatever the hell this was. Fingers clamouring to pull open the door only to spot a shadow she didn't recognize at her feet.

A loud gasp sounded as she was just about to hit dial on the contact she was looking for. The name 'Bruno Buccellati' hanging above her favorite photo of the capo and his number. "No!" shouting from her lips as she tried to evade the flash only to be frozen in place. Eyes hollowing as tendrils of snow seemed to entirely stop in place with a final flow due to her sudden stop. The cast of briefly breaking sunlight through the clouds seeming to depict her silhouette across the elongated table. The ominously floating camera phasing through the window to take its place upon the floor at her feet.
