Kadis stands at about 5'11" in height and has a thin but muscular body. He has black hair that is long enough to hang in front of his face and violet irises. Despite living for more than a century, he still has the appearance of a teenager due to dying and transitioning into a vampire when he was physically eighteen. Kadis in the present day is consistently well-dressed. His wardrobe typically consists of a dress jacket, dress shoes, dress pants, and shirts, sometimes with a tie. Occasionally, he will still wear his black leather jacket over his nice clothes from his days of being human, as it was the one thing he wanted growing up and was able to buy with saved up money. Throughout the years, Kadis has pierced both of his ears multiple times with silver pieces of different styles. He wears even more silver jewelry on his person, consisting of many rings on his fingers, bracelets around his wrists, and a chain or two around his neck.
Personality
Kadis prefers to keep his distance from others, so he often comes across as aloof and elusive. He has a rather cynical and even misanthropic view of the world around him, often belittling and mocking humans and their emotions and the significance they place on friendship and life. He’s also relatively taciturn. All of this goes out the window when he is in the presence of a woman he deems beautiful and can become very flirtatious.
As a fighter, Kadis is very unbiased when it comes to his enemies. He shows the same degree of ruthlessness to his foes regardless of age or gender. He becomes very calculating, cunning, and analytical. He is extremely perceptive, able to quickly recognize the patterns and mistakes that his opponents make, which gives him an edge. In battle, while his preference is to concoct strategies based on deduction of his opponents' fighting abilities and styles, his natural battle instincts are also highly tuned. He is capable of slashing another person's head off in just an instant, relying only on impulse. In the face of adversity, Kadis has the uncommon ability to shun all emotions and carefully look past his feelings to a blank slate, thinking three to four steps ahead to seize control of the situation. Coupled with his vast intelligence, his detached emotional state is perhaps his greatest asset.
History
Kase Harrington was born on October 8th, 1843 in New York City. He spent his early years growing up in an orphanage, never knowing who his parents were. The conditions of the group home weren’t great and overcrowded, which led to many kids being neglected, including him. This wasn’t uncommon, as in 1850, there were an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 homeless children in New York City. Some children were orphaned when their parents died in epidemics of typhoid, yellow fever, or the flu. Others were abandoned due to poverty, illness, or addiction.
Due to his surroundings, Kase was a quiet child, hardly interacting with anyone unless necessary. He kept a low profile and was hardly ever on anyone's radar, while most kids were often bullied by the bigger ones. When things became unbearable at the orphanage, he took his chances out on the streets, and it seemed as if no one noticed. He started selling matches and newspapers to survive. For protection against street violence, he had to band together with other kids from the streets, forming a gang.
That was his life until the establishment of The Orphan Train Movement in 1854. It was a supervised welfare program that transported children from crowded eastern cities of the United States to foster homes located largely in rural areas of the Midwest. Kase grew tired of the street life and took this opportunity for real work, as he felt he could better provide for himself this way. He was sent to the state of Michigan, which led the nation in lumber production during the 1850’s. His leap of faith instantly paid off for years, finding multiple jobs and earning more than enough money for his needs.
Everything changed in 1861 when Kase became very ill with tuberculosis, also known as consumption due to the weight loss associated with the disease. He spent months in the hospital without getting any better, no matter the treatments. Shortly after, he was told that death was almost certain. It felt like a cruel joke for things to be going this way during the best days of his life. He feared death as he didn’t know what to expect in the afterlife or if there even was one. He went back to his old ways, becoming very quiet except when it came to a nurse that took an interest in him for some reason.
Kase knew her as Nurse Raizel as she would never reveal her first name. She became his primary nurse as his body was at the last stage of failure. He expressed his fear of dying during those last days to Nurse Raizel but she continued to tell him everything would work out. This angered him as he knew that wasn’t the case and things were getting worse. It was unknown to him that she was a vampire and was giving him her blood without his knowledge. He soon died of the disease in his sleep the day after.
The next morning, Kase woke up confused and dazed. He was no longer in the hospital but instead in a large, fancy room. He noticed that he was wearing an unfamiliar, large silver ring, with an amethyst stone and the letter 'R' on each side of it. There was also a note beside him on the nightstand from Nurse Raizel explaining what was happening to him. He learned that he had transitioned into a vampire and that he was now alive due to dying with her vampire blood inside him. To complete the transition, he first had to consume human blood or he would die.
Also on the nightstand was a glass vial with sanguine fluid inside. It became obvious to him that it was the blood he needed to become a full vampire. Ultimately, he had a choice to make, which had him deep in thought. His fear of death still hung over him, so he chose to drink the blood. Instantly, he felt all of his senses heightened to levels he never imagined possible. It was a gift and felt like a whole new world to be a vampire. On that day, he declared Kase Harrington dead and that he was reborn as Kadis Raizel, choosing the last name based on the woman who turned him. He thought of her as his Vampire mother after never knowing his biological one.
