The Folklore

In Kyoto, the Gashadokuro were folklore entities that were said to have existed going as far back as the tenth century. They were known to be created by gathering the bones (mainly skulls) of those who died from starvation and merging to become a giant skeleton fifteen times the average size of a human. They were also known to hunt their victims, bite their heads off, and drink their blood.

Appearance 1

At the beginning of the series, Karuta appears to be short and slim with salmon-pink hair that is tied in pigtails and eyes with a similar color. Her uniform consists of a black coat and pants, with a gray undershirt underneath and a red or blue tie. At the age of twenty, she has shorter hair that reaches down to her neck. ((In AU, her hair can either be short or medium length.)) She still wears a similar blazer she had in her past when working as a Secret Service agent

Her youkai form is a gashadokuro, a large skeleton. In her youkai form, she is surrounded by a purple aura. The gashadokuro is believed to have been created by gathering the bones of people who have died of starvation. This could be a hint as to why she eats so much.

Personality: Karuta appears as a very quiet, emotionless girl who is generally seen with food in her mouth. Despite seeming to be in her own little world, she's quite observant. She doesn't mind how she’s treated as long as she's given food to eat. Despite her seemingly unfeeling persona, she shows great concern for her friends or anyone close to her, and won't hesitate to assist those she cares about in their time of need. Additionally, she has cried on a few occasions. She also enjoys eating, almost to the point of obsession, and can normally be seen snacking on many kinds of food. Later in the series, she’s seen to be more cheerful but still retains her somewhat detached self.

Powers/ Abilities

While in her Gashadokuro form (or Gasha-form for short), her abilities include Invisibility, Enhanced strength, Enhanced bite, Stealth, Environmental adaption, Lack of physical weaknesses, and Pain immunity. This entity is known for drinking blood, but Karuta isn't interested in that nor does she need blood to sustain herself. While Gashadokuro are known to have Unbreakable bones, that won't be the case for Karuta (gotta make it fair if there's going to be any fights). Gashadokuro are known to be weak against Shinto magic or Onmyodo, and of course, there's that constant hunger. To make it more fair, she'll only be allowed to be in her Gasha-form for a short period or else her hunger will intensify (she's usually seen in her yokai form for short periods anyway in the manga and anime).

Head Canons/ AU

The reason Karuta is detached/ emotionless is because she witnessed the deaths of her parents, and almost died along with them due to a powerful demon attacking them. To cope with the trauma, she became emotionless. Over the years, she has gotten better and has even started slowly becoming more cheerful.
Karuta got made fun of a lot due to her constant appetite and being a bit of an oddball (skipping PE to rescue a cat stuck in a tree, bringing a small dog into a school so it doesn't get wet in the rain, protecting her friends or herself when attacked, etc). She cares little about what people think of her, though.
Karuta loves cute things, but the tanuki is by far her favorite. She had a close friend that could transform into a tanuki that she had a crush on, hence why she loves the animal. She has no other memory of him, though.
Karuta is friends with a tanuki she named Bandit that can turn into a plushie or a cute keychain. Wherever she goes, that tanuki is with her.
In the series, it's noticed that when Karuta transformed into her Gashadokuro form in the 1st episode, she became un-clothed. Then in the 6th episode, she didn't lose her clothes that time when she transformed. So to keep things simple and prevent awkwardness, she'll still have her clothes on as she transforms.
When fighting in close-quarters combat, which Karuta prefers to avoid fighting unless absolutely necessary, she'll resort to using tonfa/ T-batons - a pair of wooden batons normally used in Okinawan martial arts.
If someone shares their food or offers food to Karuta, she'll become friends with that person/ people right off the bat.

Move Set (AU)

Gasha-Wail: Hence the name, Karuta lets out a loud wail that could be heard up to two miles; a useful tool in either instilling fear or trying to call/ cry for backup. (It sounds like a Hollow from BLEACH, just to give you an idea.)
Bone Crusher: Whether Karuta uses one bony fist or two bony fists, this move is mainly used to either cause the ground to shake, or land a powerful hit to her opponent(s).
Vanishing Act: This would be where Karuta becomes invisible and uses stealth to either hide or carry out a sneak attack.
