Tetsusaiga: Japanese for Steel-Cleaving Fang or Iron-Crushing Fang, Tetsusaiga is a powerful youkai sword forged from one of the fangs of Inuyasha's father by the bladesmith Toutousai. The sword can absorb demonic powers and energy and is useful in preventing Inuyasha from falling victim to his own demonic aura, which if left unmanaged will turn him into a berserker. In its sealed state, Tetsusaiga resembles a rusty katana with a nicked and dented blade, as well as a torn hilt-wrap. When wielded by a user with demon blood, the blade is able to be transformed into a five-foot-long fang capable of immense damage. Over the course of his journey, Inuyasha develops Tetsusaiga's signature Wind Scar (Kaze no Kizu), Backlash Wave (Bakuryuha) and Adamant Barrage (Kongōsōha, Adamant Destroying Spears) techniques. Eventually, Inuyasha gains a new ability in Meido Zangetsuha (Meidō Zangetsuha, Dark Path of the Dawn Moon's Wave) that Sesshoumaru prepared for him as part of their father's design.

Tetsusaiga's Sheath: The sheath can deflect energy attacks with the barrier used to contain Tetsusaiga's power. These barriers, though powerful, can only withstand a certain amount of damage before breaking. The sheath also possesses the power to recall the Tetsusaiga to itself - a useful ability whenever Inuyasha is somehow separated from his sword.

Robe of the Fire Rat: The red robes which Inuyasha wears are woven from the hair of the Fire-rat. It serves as a fireproof armor and has the ability to regenerate itself.

Claws: Inuyasha has sharp, blade-like claws, and he can use them to easily slice ordinary foes to ribbons. Normally, he uses these claws in his Sankon Tessou Claws of Exorcism or Claws of Steel attack. His full-powered Sankon Tessou is at least strong enough to break steel frames and destroy numerous roof tiles.

Blood Solidification: By using his demonic power, Inuyasha can harden his own blood and throw them like bladed projectiles in an attack he refers to as Hijin Kessou Flying Blade Blood Claws; Claws of Blood or Daggers of Blood; Blades of Blood. While he typically used blood from an already open wound, Inuyasha can draw the necessary blood to use the attack by digging his nails into his palms. He will often use this tactic as a surprise counterattack after being wounded when his opponents assume he is weakened and they lower their guard.

Tetsusaiga's Powers

Kenatsu: Sword-Force, Sword-Pressure; Like many youkai swords, Tetsusaiga can cut opponents without touching them by emitting small concentrated bursts of youki. This was Inuyasha's main method of combat with the Tetsusaiga before he learned the Kaze no Kizu, using it to dispatch of weaker youkai with simple slashes. During nights of the New Moon, Inuyasha can't transform the Tetsusaiga while in human form.

Wind Scar: Kaze no Kizu, Scar of the Wind; The Tetsusaiga's full-powered kenatsu and signature attack that could slay one hundred youkai in a single strike. It was activated by sensing the fissure (or "scar") between the clashing youki of the Tetsusaiga's wielder and his youkai opponent. Swinging the sword into the fissure unleashes a massive, destructive wave of youki. Inuyasha learned to put his own power into the attack so that the scar appeared around Tetsusaiga's blade and could be triggered instantaneously.

Backlash Wave: Bakuryuha, Explosive Stream Blast; The Tetsusaiga's ougi (ultimate technique). It used the opponent's youki and unleashed the Kaze no Kizu at the right point. The youkai's energy would be reflected back with the added power of the Kaze no Kizu. Two requirements are needed in order to implement the Bakuryūha. The first is that Inuyasha can only reflect pure energy attacks composed of youki. The second is that his own youki has to be at a similar level of his opponent's or the Bakuryūha will not form.

Power Absorption: Perhaps the Tetsusaiga's most useful ability is its power to absorb the primary abilities or attacks of any youkai or youkai-based artifact which is destroyed by its blade. Whatever the blade absorbs is then converted into a cutting nature.

Indestructibility: During the battle to destroy the demon sword Dakki, it is revealed by Inuyasha that, though Tetsusaiga can be badly damaged, but the blade itself cannot break so long as Inuyasha remains alive. Tetsusaiga apparently gained this ability after being reforged with Inuyasha's own fang, as the original blade (made from his father's fang) had been bitten in half by Goshinki.

Barrier of Wind: Demonstrated during the fight with Dakki, Tetsusaiga avoids taking direct blows when it reaches a point where it could be destroyed. It releases wind from any cracks it has, forming a protective shell around the blade and its wielder.

Akai Tetsusaiga: also known as Kekkai Yaburi no Akai Tessaiga, Red Tessaiga Barrier Shattering; In this state, the blade is able to cut through barriers, allowing Inuyasha to reach his enemies. It is ineffective against spiritual shields.

Adamant Barrage: Kongōsōha, Diamond Spear Blast When swung, the Tetsusaiga fires a barrage of diamond shrapnel that could dissolve barriers in which the Red (Akai) Tetsusaiga could not. This technique can also be combined with the Kaze no Kizu to enhance its power.

Youki Absorption: After breaking the youkai sword Dakki, Tetsusaiga gained the ability to absorb an opponent's youki (demonic energy) directly. This power also allows Inuyasha to pull demons from possessed victims.

Youketsu: Vortex of Demonic Energy; The visual manifestation of demonic energy in the form of a whirlpool that appears behind a youkai and is visible to just a few. After realizing that the true nature of the Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga was to cut youki, Inuyasha learned how to see youketsu (the source of a youkai's youki) and used the Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga to cut it, instantly destroying normal youkai. Beings created of many different youkai, like Naraku and Mōryōmaru, have several youketsu, which means cutting them will destroy parts of their body and prevent regeneration of the destroyed parts; however, the Fuyouheki proved to be a nuisance as it hides youki, preventing Inuyasha from seeing where to strike. Against stronger youkai, the Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga could cut away portions of its opponent's youki to weaken their power, which could prove fatal.

Meidō Zangetsuha: Dark Path of the Dawn's Moon Wave; This technique was attained when Sesshoumaru's Tenseiga broke on Tetsusaiga. The original technique manifested as a giant black circle that sent anything within its vicinity directly to the Netherworld. It could also be used as an escape from a Meidō one was already in, though the exit location was not set. Inuyasha also used it to reach both the closed-off path between eras in the Bone-Eater's Well and the Sacred Jewel itself.

Meidō Blades: Once Inuyasha completely mastered the Meidō Tetsusaiga, the sword could fire multiple black crescent-shaped portals that not only cut an opponent, but had their remains sucked up into the path. Thus the technique kept its original ability intact while also adding the Tetsusaiga's cutting nature. It seemed to be stronger than the original Meidō Zangetsuha, as it was able to destroy Naraku's body forever, which was impervious to the original move, but not his spirit.
