Cuts. Bruises. I had enough of those before graduating high school. Thankfully, they didn't come from home. The school and streets were not the friendliest, even if there were friends to meet on both. The halls and bathrooms were quite the adventures at times, not knowing if I was going to get pinned to a wall or get a swirlie because I refuse to give my lunch money. I also had to duck down heading home when I hear tires squealing nearby, because someone's about to give another the gift of hot lead. And they were so nice that they gave way more than one piece every single time. And the gifts were never optional.
At least my parents didn't raise a fool. I love them. My siblings and I were some of the lucky ones. We have a mom and a dad that actually cared for their children. Yeah, dad boozed, but he did so with great moderation. He taught my siblings and me how to defend ourselves and enjoy the great outdoors, far from the hellhole we grew up in whenever we go out and camp. Mom got us to enjoy music and pop culture, even recorded on video my first guitar riff. Movies and gaming were also how we bonded. Painful and perilous as it was outside the walls of our home, inside, we're a happy family.
